We will be “retiring” this column today, because the sport is dead to us. We read this interview with UCLA Bruins Head Coach Chip Kelly, and we know the sport is on its way to self destruction within 10 years. We read this piece, too, and we know it even more so. Heck, we stated it here about 4 years ago, in truth. We’re often ahead of the times, based on data, logic, and morality. So, we will be shuttering MNC Wednesdays.

This will happen without full closure, as the 2023 mythical national championship has been compromised already, due to the inclusion of a cheating team, another undeserving SEC team, and who knows what else shady behind closed doors. Truthfully, we often feel somewhat similar about our other former “favorite” sport, too, but we have miles to go with historical data there—but we’ve run out of zest for the same here.

We’ve covered the Heisman errors (a lot of them); we’ve covered the best conferences; we’ve covered the best years. It’s just a dead horse to us now—forgive the expression as we really like and respect horses. There’s nowhere else we want to go with it now, after almost 4 years of constant coverage every Wednesday. This all started during the Covid pandemic when we decided to run the MNC exercise, starting with 1936.

That seems like a lifetime ago, and in a lot of ways, it was. We’re not sure what to do with Wednesday columns now, but in 2024, we will think of something else to do here. We’re positive that, on occasion, we will fill a Sunday Surmising column with some commentary on something else shady about college football, but we hereby retire this column space today. We hope you understand and are not disappointed by this.

Cheers.
