It’s a fun day on Tuesday Teasings today as we check in on major-league baseball as a whole, only to find the Detroit Tigers with the best record in baseball. But of course, you’d never know this from the way the lamestream sports mediots are reporting. It’s all Los Angeles Dodgers, New York Mets, and New York Yankees … all the time. But hey, the Tigers only play in the No. 14 television market nationally, so … yeah.
On this fine June 3 morning, Detroit is the only ballclub with 40 victories so far, and its 40-21 record has given the team a 6.5-game lead in the American League Central. Meanwhile the mighty Yankees have a 36-22 record, so the Tigers are the best team in the junior circuit by a 2.5-game margin. In the National League, the Mets (38-22) and the Dodgers (36-24) also trail Detroit, so where is all the news about the Tigers? Yep.
Nowhere to be found. The best story in baseball is being ignored. Welcome to the modern mediot circle jerk.
We have seen a few pieces on the Detroit resurgence since last August, but they are rare pieces, indeed, buried deep on mainstream websites and hardly promoted front page, above-the-fold at all. The Tigers haven’t won the World Series since 1984, and as a team outside the Top 10 TV market, it would be a surprise to see Detroit go all the way and win the championship. However, we always like rooting for the underdogs.
The Tigers have been on the short end of luck in their most recent World Series appearances (2006, 2012), too. Both times, they swept the AL Championship Series, only to have to sit around and wait for the NLCS to go seven games. Rusty by the time the Fall Classic rolled around, Detroit underperformed against sabermetrically inferior teams and didn’t come close to winning it all. Let that be a lesson to all teams, really.
But we digress: right now, the Tigers rate out as the No. 2 sabermetric team, behind the Yankees. And there is a long stretch ahead of 100-plus games still yet to play, so getting excited now isn’t practical. However, the Detroit organization should be getting its due. Last year, the Tigers made the postseason for the first time since 2014, so it’s been a long rebuilding process in the Motor City, for sure. The fans are ready now.
Comerica Park is one of the best ballparks in the majors, as well, which doesn’t get its praise, either. In fact, the stadium is in our personal favorite Top 3 list, overall, along with T-Mobile Park in Seattle and Coors Field in Denver. These three parks do not get enough attention and exposure, due to MLB’s love for bigger TV markets and those stadiums. The Mariners are leading the AL West right now, while the Rockies stink.
Alas, it’s all about television revenue for the baseball world, just as it is for the NBA. Detroit may not be sexy for the TV ratings, but the Tigers are playing excellent baseball these days, and the real baseball fans out there should be aware of it. The series of the weekend upcoming should be promoted, as the Chicago Cubs and the Detroit team have at each other in Comerica on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Let’s see who notices.
