We’re back for another WNBA Tuesday analysis today, as we close in on the present day. The Las Vegas Aces won their second consecutive league title, and it’s an interesting year to examine for a few reasons. We’re looking at yet another Rookie of the Year who was significantly more impressive than the Overrated One. We’re also seeing an WNBA all-time great make her way toward our version of the EGOT. Read on; enjoy!

2023 WNBA MVP: Breanna Stewart, C, New York (original, confirmed)

New York Liberty center Breanna Stewart won the MVP vote, even though she finished second in PER (28.6) and WS (10.3) to Las Vegas Aces forward/center A’ja Wilson (32.9 PER, 10.4 WS). No one else finished above 7.5 WS on the season, so it comes down to these two. The Aces won 34 games, while New York won 32 games. Teammates? Vegas had two other players in the Top 9 for PER, while Stewart had no support there.

Win Shares? Vegas had four of the Top 5, while New York only had one other player in the Top 10 (and it was the tenth player on the list). So, we confirm Stewart’s vote win here: value-wise, she was carrying a lot more water than Wilson was, despite Wilson’s amazing edge in PER. It helps when you have better teammates. This was Stewart’s second vote win, although it is our third time giving her the hardware. Impressive.

2023 WNBA ROTY: Aliyah Boston, F/C, Indiana (original, confirmed)

This is amusing to us, as Indiana Fever F/C Aliyah Boston won the vote here with 6.0 Win Shares, and she won the vote unanimously—with twice the WS value that Caitlin Clark posted in 2024. Tell someone this statistical reality, and they will just look at you blankly (idiots). The Fever still missed the postseason by five wins after posting a 13-27 record, but don’t blame Boston. She was a monster in the middle for Indiana.

2023 WNBA DPOY: A’ja Wilson, F/C, Las Vegas (original); Alyssa Thomas, F, Connecticut (revised)

Wilson posted 3.5 DWS to lead the league and secure the vote win here; is there anyone else to consider? Yes, Connecticut Sun F Alyssa Thomas (3.3) and Stewart (3.3). Each player had a teammate in the DWS Top 8, so that’s a wash. How did the Sun do in the standings? Connecticut finished third in wins with 27 victories, so that means the top three teams each had a Top 3 defender and a secondary defender, as well.

How do we split hairs here? Well, the Sun gave up under 80 points per game, which was the best mark in the league. We like that kind of impact, so we’re going with Thomas here, as clearly all three players were outstanding. We would not argue with anyone who disagrees with us here, so have at it, folks. We’re good.

2023 WNBA FINALS MVP: Wilson (original, confirmed)

The Aces dropped the Liberty in four games to win the Finals matchup; overall, Las Vegas posted an 8-1 record in the postseason. Wilson (2.5 WS) won the playoff MVP vote; the only player to consider is guard Jackie Young (2.0), but clearly Wilson was the dominant player here and deserve to win the vote. Confirm! This means Wilson has won three different awards from us so far. We hope she closes out the quartet, soon.
