This WNBA Tuesday series continues forward, and it’s a significant one for us—many reasons why, including the fact we covered the first season of the Las Vegas Aces after they moved from San Antonio for this inaugural season in Sin City (none of the content remains online, however, sadly; we put a lot of effort into that assignment for AXS.com!). But we digress: the Seattle Storm won its third overall WNBA title.
2018 WNBA MVP: Breanna Stewart, F, Seattle (original); Liz Cambage, C, Dallas (revised)
Seattle forward Breanna Stewart topped her peers in Win Shares (7.7) and won the MVP vote; she also finished second in PER (28.8), behind Dallas Wings center Liz Cambage (30.7)—who was third in WS (6.2). Our other two candidates for this hardware are Washington Mystics forward/guard Elena Delle Donne (27.3 PER, 5.9 WS) and Minnesota Lynx C Sylvia Fowles (26.5, 6.6), last year’s winner. So, where to go now?
Even though the Wings finished just 15-19, they beat out the Aces for the last playoff spot. The other teams were all at least three victories better than Dallas, which makes Cambage the biggest difference maker. Stewart was great, but her team posted a league-high 26 wins, so it’s hard to measure her value in that context. The Storm still was a playoff team without her, so we go with Cambage for this award, oddly.
This was Cambage’s third WNBA season, as she had played for the Tulsa/Dallas organization in 2011 and 2013 seasons as well, as she played elsewhere around the globe for four seasons. Interesting career for her, to be sure, a native Australian.
2018 WNBA ROTY: A’ja Wilson, C, Las Vegas (original, confirmed)
Las Vegas C A’ja Wilson was the No. 1 overall pick, and she won the ROTY vote unanimously, too, after posting 4.4 WS—almost 50 percent more than Caitlin Clark did in 2024, in six fewer games. Just another reminder how overrated Clark is to those who actually pay attention to facts instead of hype. Alas, the Aces never would have been so close to a postseason berth without Wilson, so we’re confirming this, readily.
2018 WNBA DPOY: Alana Beard, G/F, Los Angeles (original); Sylvia Fowles, C, Minnesota (revised)
Despite just 1.4 DWS, which was not even Top 10 in the league, Los Angeles Sparks G/F Alana Beard won her second DPOY vote in a row. She’s obviously not getting our trophy, either, just like last year. Our candidates? Fowles (2.9 DWS), Stewart (2.7), or Atlanta Dream F Jessica Breland (2.7). With just 18 wins, the Lynx were the closest to missing the postseason, giving Fowles the most value. We choose her, finally.
Three times previously, she’d won this vote (2011, 2013, 2016), and we’d re-assigned the award. But as we always say, things have a way of evening themselves out over time if they’re legit. Fowles always was legit.
2018 WNBA FINALS MVP: Stewart (original, confirmed)
The Storm beat the Phoenix Mercury in five games to advance to the Finals after an initial bye. Then, Seattle swept Washington in three games to win the championship. Stewart was voted the MVP, and we agree, as she topped the Storm roster in postseason Win Shares (1.3). It wasn’t the most dominant playoff performance ever, but it was the best one on this championship team. We confirm her award. All’s well …

She was not a feminist herself, per se, but she raised her children to be champions for equality. She passed early this morning at the age of 81; this one is for you, Mary Catherine.
