Olympic Wednesday moves to within a decade of this year, taking on the 2014 Sochi Olympiad, the Winter Games hosted by a summer resort town in Russia—go figure. The event was plagued by controversy, for obvious reasons, despite 2,747 athletes from 88 nations competing in 98 medal events across 15 disciplines in seven different sporting areas. This is what happens when humanity doesn’t prioritize ethics or morals.
But we digress: five different nations won at least 24 medals, led by the Russian Federation (29), the United States (28), Norway (26), Canada (25), and the Netherlands (24). Who knows for sure how much the Russians cheated, so we’re not sure if this medal count is really right. Alas, we may never know, for sure: what we do know is that it was a tightly contested medal table with five nations with five medals of each other.
Most Outstanding Male Athlete: Viktor An, Russia
Short-track speed skating sensation Viktor An did the host nation some honors by winning three gold medals and a bronze medal, too. He wins this award from us for the second time, as a result. He took first place in the individual 500m; individual 1,000m; and the 5,000m relay events. His third-place finish came in the 1,500m individual race. Reaching the podium in every possible opportunity is really an achievement.
Most Outstanding Female Athlete: Ireen Wüst, Netherlands
With a total of five medals, Dutch speed skater Ireen Wüst takes this prize as the most decorated athlete in Sochi. What makes it even sweeter is her status as an openly gay athlete—spitting in the face of Russian political ideology. She won gold in the 3,000m individual event and the team pursuit race, as well … her third straight Games with a gold medal. She also won silvers in the 1,000m; 1,500m; and 5,000m events.
Most Outstanding Male Team: Dutch Speed Skating
The men’s speed skaters from the Netherlands pulled off an incredible feat here in Sochi: of the eight overall medal sweeps in these Games, the Dutch men earned almost half of them in this discipline alone (the 500m; the 5,000m; and the 10,000m events). Two athletes won multiple medals in these sweeps: Sven Kramer (gold in 5,000; silver in 10,000) and Jorrit Bergsma (gold in 10,000; bronze in 5,000). Amazing!
Most Outstanding Female Team: Dutch Speed Skating
The women from the Netherlands won 10 of a possible 16 medals in the speed-skating discipline to take this honor—led by Wüst, of course. In addition to her achievements, other multiple medal winners from the Dutch team here include Margot Boer (two bronzes), Jorien ter Mors (two golds), and Lotte van Beek (one gold, one bronze). ter Mors, van Beek, and Wüst joined Marrit Leenstra in winning the team pursuit.
