Interesting news in the last few days about the “Pacific-X” Conference (we have no idea what number will end up there—whether it be the now-current two, 2026-confirmed six, and/or some other number as of yet undetermined), as four Mountain West Conference schools have been invited to join the evolving Conference of Champions formerly known as the Pac-12. This is probably just the start, but it’s a good one.
Boise State, Colorado State, Fresno State, and San Diego State have accepted the offers and will join the Pac-X for the 2026-2027 year, according to multiple news reports. What happens next is anyone’s guess, but there is even speculation that maybe California and Stanford would return to their roots as a result of this seeing as how the Pac-X needs to a Pac-8, at least, to meet NCAA requirements for such silly designations.
Now, Oregon State and Washington State, the full members firmly in control of the conference’s future, can sit back and see what kind of dust settles and where. Experts seem to think that if the duo is going to invite any more schools from the MWC, it would likely be UNLV and Air Force, although it would make little sense to leave Nevada-Reno and Utah State behind at that point, in our opinion—or even Hawaii, in truth.
The issue may be money for some of those “lesser” MWC schools, however, as there is a stiff penalty for the schools to pay if they leave the conference, and there is also a fee the Pac-X must pay the MWC for poaching as well. So, there have to be careful choices in terms of expected revenues, money stashed away for such purposes, and the bright open future. It always comes down to the corruption and greed of TV revenue. Sad.
We don’t like it anymore than you do, yet we’re all complicit and guilty in this—for letting it even get to this point … especially the mediots who just went along with all the corruption for the last 30 years, with ESPN at the forefront of the profiteering. However, we’re confident the current Pac-6 will find a way to add at least two more teams and be formalized again for 2026 and beyond … if the Akufo League doesn’t happen.
