In a first for the United States, Olympic Wednesday comes to America for a Winter Olympiad: specifically, the small upstate New York village of Lake Placid—which is more famous for a different Games, which we will get to eventually. There were only 14 medal events in 7 disciplines at these Olympics, which featured 241 athletes from 17 different nations. Definitely not the biggest of events, but it was significant nonetheless.

The host nation won the medal count with a mere 12 combined golds, silvers, and bronzes. Norway was the runner-up nation with 10 medals (3G, 4S, 3B), and Canada placed third with 7 medals (1G, 1S, 5B). No other nation earned more than 3 total medals, so—again—this was a small affair. Only 3 athletes overall won multiple medals, in fact, making our choices below somewhat more challenging in every sense of the word.

Most Outstanding Male Athlete: Irving Jaffee & Jack Shea, U.S. (tie)

The only 2 men to win double golds were American speedskaters Irving Jaffee (5,000m and 10,000m) and Jack Shea (500m and 1,500m). There’s no point in picking between them, so we won’t. Shea did set an Olympic record in the 500m finals, but we’re not going to drill down that deep for these awards.

Most Outstanding Female Athlete: Sonja Henie, Norway

We have our first repeat winner here, as Norwegian figure skating legend Sonja Henie was the only women’s gold medal winner. Not much else to say here, as we would just be repeating either ourselves or someone else. Henie is a legend, for many reasons.

Most Outstanding Male Team: Norwegian Nordic Combined & Ski Jumping

Norway swept both the Nordic Combined and Ski Jumping (large hill) events: all 6 medals won by 6 different athletes, but it was easily the most dominant performance by a singular men’s unit in Lake Placid. A honorable mention to the American speed skaters, who won gold in all 4 distances—but it wasn’t enough.

Most Outstanding Female Team: American Figure Skating

Maribel Vinson took the bronze in the women’s figure skating competition, and Beatrix Loughren earned the silver in Mixed Pairs. That means the U.S. women won multiple medals, claiming this distinction with ease in an Olympiad devoid of women’s opportunities.
