In a rare break from the pattern, Olympic Wednesday moves from the Winter Games in Switzerland to the Summer Games in The Netherlands. This had something to do with the 1924 Paris Games and promises made to Amsterdam, so it is what it is. However, this Olympiad is mostly remembered for being an amazing coming-out party for women track & field athletes. Overall, almost 3,300 athletes took part in 125 events.

Editor’s Note: The United States won the medal count (56), followed by Germany (39). There was a tie for third at 25 medals between Finland, France, and Sweden, while the host nation earned 23 medals—including 8 golds, which tied for third in that category. There were 20 different disciplines contested in this olympiad and no Olympic Village as athletes stayed on national ships moored in the local harbor. That doesn’t sound as fun, though, does it?

Most Outstanding Male Athlete: Georges Miez, Switzerland

It is frequently noted these Games lacked a dominant individual, but we beg to differ. Swiss gymnast Georges Miez won 3 golds and a silver in Amsterdam—winning the horizontal bar and the men’s all-around competition, in addition to the team all-around event, too. His silver medal in the pommel horse was just icing on the cake, really. He was the only athlete to win 3 gold medals in this Summer Olympiad.

Most Outstanding Female Athlete: Martha Norelius & Albina Osipowich, United States (tie)

We have another tie here, similar to the one in the 1900 Summer Games. Two American swimmers each won an individual gold before combining to win a relay gold (4x100m freestyle) together as well. Martha Norelius defender her 1924 gold in the 400m freestyle, and Albina Osipowich emerged victorious in the 100m freestyle. They were the only women to win 2 golds at these Olympics, so it’s an easy call to make.

Most Outstanding Male Team: Swiss Gymnastics

In addition to Miez, Hermann Hänggi also won 4 medals: the team gold, the pommel horse gold, the all-around silver, and the parallel bar bronze. In total, the Swiss men won 5 of the 7 golds in the gymnastic events—Eugen Mack won gold in the horse vault, in addition to the team all-around gold and a bronze in the horizontal bar. The 3 men won a total of 11 medals combined, including 8 medals in individual events.

Most Outstanding Female Team: American Swimming & Diving

The U.S. women won 5 of the 6 medals in the diving events, including both golds and a 2-medal effort by Georgia Coleman (silver in platform, bronze in springboard), while the swimming events also were dominated by the American women: they won 5 medals in 5 events there, thanks to the individual efforts of Norelius and Osipowich. However, all the U.S. swimming medals came in the freestyle events. Interesting.
