As we move closer to the proverbial end of the Conference of (real NCAA) Champions on Pac-12 Friday, it’s time to take a peek at the Washington Huskies. Overall, they’ve been the fourth-best football program in the conference, which is a pretty good accomplishment. With 19 conference titles, 26 Associated Press poll finishes, and 39 bowl appearances, the Huskies have been successful—even winning one of our MNCs.
5. 1992
As the defending co-champs, these Huskies turned in a pretty good performance: another league title (shared with Stanford, even though Washington beat the Cardinal by 35 points) and a third-straight Rose Bowl appearance. Alas, the Huskies lost the Rose to finish 9-3 on the year, ranked 11th in the AP poll. But they ended up No. 3 in the SRS, thanks to the No. 3 SOS and the No. 7 defense, nationally. Pretty impressive.
4. 1940
Washington finished second in the old PCC, losing only to our MNC from Minnesota and league champion Stanford. Somehow, that was only good enough for the No. 10 AP rank, despite a 7-2 record and the No. 6 finish in the SRS rankings overall. The Huskies played the No. 16 SOS while sporting the No. 14 defense nationally. In its 7 victories, Washington surrendered just 15 points combined, throwing 5 shutouts total.
3. 2016
The most recent entry on the list, these Huskies went 12-2 overall to finish No. 4 in the AP poll. Washington won the Pac-12 Championship Game over Colorado before losing in the CFP semifinal to Alabama. The team was No. 8 nationally on both offense and defense, and it finished No. 3 in the SRS rankings overall. The Huskies beat four ranked teams on the year by a combined 104 points, so this was a dominant squad to face.
2. 1990
In the first of three straight Rose Bowl appearances, Washington beat Iowa to finish 10-2 with the No. 5 AP poll ranking. The Huskies’ only conference loss was by 3 points to UCLA, although it kept Washington out of the MNC hunt—in addition to the earlier loss at Colorado, the eventual MNC. The Huskies finished with the No. 11 offense, the No. 8 defense, the No. 12 SOS, and the No. 2 overall SRS ranking. These were golden years.
1. 1991
The best team in Washington history won the Rose Bowl and the MNC with a perfect 12-0 record. The Huskies were No. 2 on offense, No. 2 on defense, No. 8 in SOS, and No. 1 in the overall SRS rankings. It doesn’t get much better than that, really. Washington’s closest victory was a 7-point road win over highly ranked California, but otherwise, most teams didn’t come within a few touchdowns of the Huskies. Boom!
