We keep gliding through here on this MLB Monday miniseries as we reach the final year for the Dodgers in Brooklyn and the Giants in New York. What an upheaval that must have been for baseball fans … everywhere, really. But it’s what happened because the New York Yankees were so dominant. Anyway, on with the show for this season in review. Will a Brooklyn manager win NL MOTY hardware again?! No.
1957 World Series MVP: Lew Burdette, SP, Milwaukee (original, confirmed)
Yes, that’s right: the Milwaukee Braves won the Fall Classic—in seven games over the Yankees, doing everyone a favor. Lew Burdette tossed a seven-hit shutout in Game 7 on the road to clinch the title for the Braves, too, which is probably why he was picked the voted MVP at the time. But he also won Games 2 and 5 as well, giving up just two earned runs in three complete-game efforts covering 27 innings. That’s a baller.
The only other candidate here is the 1957 NL MVP, rightfielder Hank Aaron. He hit three home runs and drove in 7 runs, while posting a 1.200 OPS in 28 ABs against New York pitching. But we’re sticking with Burdette here, for sheer dominance. Any other year, almost, a performance like Aaron’s would win this award, but when a starter wins three times with complete games and a 0.67 ERA, it’s hard to ignore.
1957 AL MOTY: Casey Stengel, New York
Only one manager of a winning team notched a positive PPP mark this season (Detroit Tigers Manager Jack Tighe). But his team finished 20 games behind the Yankees; meanwhile, N.Y. Manager Casey Stengel broke dead even in the PPP column as his team won the pennant by 8 games over the Chicago White Sox and their manager, Al Lopez (minus-2 PPP). Therefore, Stengel wins this, mostly by default while on cruise control.
1957 NL MOTY: Fred Haney, Milwaukee
The Braves won the pennant by 8 games, as well, over the St. Louis Cardinals, and Milwaukee Manager Fred Haney posted a plus-2 PPP mark. No manager of a team within shouting distance of the Braves could pull off a significantly better result, so we will give this nod to Haney without much more discussion. Cardinals Manager Fred Hutchinson did post a plus-3 PPP result, but it obviously didn’t really matter.
