We read this piece today on CBS Sports, and it made us chortle out loud. Not the headline, mind you, but this early statement of “fact” by the writer: “The widespread consensus in and around the NFL is that Bill Belichick is the greatest coach of all time.” Really? A guy who got busted for cheating multiple times? A guy who also hasn’t been able to win much without cheatin’ Tom Brady on his roster, either, we might add.
The NFL coaching GOAT? Not even close. Not even in the ballpark. Not even in the discussion!
This topic will deserve a deeper exploration at a later date, but off the top of our heads, we remember that Belichick—without Brady as his quarterback—has made the NFL playoffs in just two of the nine seasons as a head coach with the Cleveland Browns and the New England Patriots combined. We count 2008 as one of those years, when Brady was out for 99.5 percent of the season after suffering an injury in Week 1.
From 1991 to 1995 with the Browns, though, Belichick posted just a 37-45 record with one postseason appearance (1994). The Patriots did go 11-5 without Brady in 2008, but they missed the playoffs anyway. In the three seasons since Brady left to play for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, New England has posted a 25-26 record with one postseason berth. So, that’s Belichick without Brady: a sub-.500 coach with a 73-76 mark.
We know Brady’s success is mostly built of fraud, and if Belichick’s success is mostly built of Brady’s fraud, then where does that leave Belichick? Is this cause-and-effect logic really that hard for people to grasp? According to this CBS Sports writer, evidently the answer there is yes. We know why, too, since it sells to the Massholes who support cheating franchises like the Patriots and the Boston Red Sox at all costs. Go figure.
More off the top of our heads? We see it hard to choose anyone other than Vince Lombardi as the best coach in NFL history: 10 seasons, 5 titles, no losing seasons, and a serious legacy of success. Again, we will look into this more deeply at a later date, but for now, it’s easy to refute any claim Belichick has to such adoration and praise. And John Madden is probably out, too, as we discussed previously. Can’t wait to do it.
