We have only 9 more seasons to go now in our Pac-12 Friday miniseries on college basketball in the Conference of (real NCAA) Champions and its Midwest partners, the B1G. We plan on covering these awards back to the start of the 64-team Tournament era (1985). This season saw 8 teams make March Madness from the two leagues combined, with three Sweet 16 teams and one team reaching the Final.
1993 Pac-10 PoY: Chris Mills, F, Arizona (original, confirmed)
The Arizona Wildcats won the conference title by 5 games, and forward Chris Mills won the PoY vote. With a league margin like that, it would be hard to pick a player from another school for the award. Arizona had a very good roster with supporting players like guard Damon Stoudamire and center Ed Stokes, but Mills (20.4 ppg, 7.9 rpg) was the dominant guy on the team, and so we will confirm the vote victory.
1993 B1G PoY: Calbert Cheaney, G, Indiana (original, confirmed)
With a 2-game edge on the Michigan Wolverines, the Indiana Hoosiers won the league championship. Indiana G Calbert Cheaney won the PoY vote, as well. Michigan ended up having to vacate all its wins this season, so we cannot consider anyone from that roster. Thus, the Hoosiers’ 6-game lead on the third-place teams all but clinches this award for Cheaney (22.4 ppg). He was the top dog on a loaded squad, for sure.
